Pretend City is proud to be a part of the 25th Annual Imagination Celebration Arts Festival for Families and Children. We will be hosting a special night for the families of Orange County to experience the colorful creativity of the visual, music and literary arts offered at our museum. Each child is asked to bring in their own creation from school or home to “unlock the gates to the city tonight!”

Parent participation is not required, however, is encouraged.

Why should I partake in this? Is your child prepared for preschool? Give them the extra support they may need to optimize their social, cognitive and brain development before they start school. Throughout this 10 week workshop, you will learn things like:

•How to foster a healthy, positive parent-child relationship

•How to generate effective solutions to common parenting challenges

•What are appropriate developmental expectations

•Specific strategies for how to respond to challenging behavior

•Positive parenting skills and the difference they can make in your child’s behavior

•The importance of giving children choices and how that affects their self esteem

Celebrate National Teacher’s Day at Pretend City as we transform our Pretend City Library into a Schoolhouse for the day! Children will have the opportunity to become a teacher and lead fun-filled lessons of their very own! They’ll learn about the various roles teachers play by participating in activities run by the “Pretend City Bell Schedule”.

Why should I partake in this? Since school is an experience shared by most children it is beneficial when their pretend play also allows them to play school and pretend to be a teacher. Children in this class won't sit still for long learning Spanish through a variety of modalities designed to engage their minds and bodies. Music and movement form the foundation for the classes, as the children sing simple, rhythmic songs and dance, run, spin and jump around the room! Meanwhile, our teachers work with the accompanying adults, by teaching them age-appropriate games and activities so they can reinforce and continue the learning at home. These "playclasses" are great for parents and caregivers who want to learn a language alongside their children!

Who is it for? Children 11 months -3 years (Parent participation is required)

Meanwhile, they become familiar with more complex aspects of the language by engaging in "adventures," art projects and movement-based games that require them to solve simple problems - in their new language, of course! These adventures, starring the Lango Kids (our multicultural cast of characters) take students to other lands and cultures to ensure that their language instruction is combined with cultural exposure.

Are you prepared to brighten the brains of the little ones you care for every day? In the first three years of life, a child’s brain is busy laying the foundation for lifelong learning, emotional stability, language and motor development, thinking skills and much more.  As you participate in this interactive class, you will learn about:

•The windows of opportunity for optimal brain development of infants and toddlers

•How to identify opportunities for enhancing development opportunities during the first 3
years of a child’s life

•How to enhance wiring opportunities for each domain of development including emotional, social, intellectual (which includes language and cognition), and physical (which includes motor and vision)

•How to create interactive experiences within Pretend City Children’s Museum, using the Way to Play Adventure Guide, designed to enhance wiring opportunities in the classroom

•How to construct curriculum plans to stimulate wiring opportunities for children in the classroom

Join Pretend City as we celebrate "The Invention of Human Wings" through a creativity workshop presented by community artist Chief Ten Dogs. In this class, children work collaboratively to create an e-book filled with their very own ideas, words and illustrations that will be inspired by and follow a character named Gamma Rae who accidentally invents human wings.

Time: 3:00p.m. – 5:00p.m.

Young ocean explorers will go on an ocean adventure while exploring samples from five of the different habitats that are right off the California coast. Children will have the opportunity to use their observation skills to look at what makes each of these unique habitats. Ocean Adventures hopes to spark an interest in science and ocean conservation, through cool hands-on ocean activities.

Why should I partake in this? The oceans cover over 70% of the earth, and are home to a diverse population of plants and animals. It is important for citizens of all ages to respect and care for the world’s oceans.

Anything else I should know? We will be working with kelp and sand straight from the ocean, parents are asked to remain in the class with their ocean explorer.

Sunday, May 9 – “Me as My Mommy” Day  
Make Mother's Day extra special this year by creating special gifts and homemade Mother's Day cards at Pretend City during “Me as My Mommy” Day! In honor of Mother’s Day, children are encouraged to come to Pretend City to play like “mommy”, guiding their parents the way that mommy would guide them.

Why should I partake in this? Parents serve as the primary role model in their children’s lives. This will be the opportunity to take a moment to see how your child views you as they pretend to be you! Wednesday, May 12 – Speech, Language & Hearing Screenings
Speech Pathology Associates and Providence Speech and Hearing will be offering free screenings for speech, language and hearing. Each child’s screening will take approximately 5-15 minutes, and will be proctored by a Licensed Clinician with the state of California and certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Time: 2:00p.m. – 4:00p.m.
Who is it for? 18 months +

How do I sign up and by when? N/A

Why should I partake in this? Speech and Language Screening tests are conducted to identify health conditions that might need further assessment and are an important part of well-child health care. Speech and language screenings assess a child's ability in the areas of:  Voice (tone, loudness), Articulation (pronouncing sounds), Fluency (stuttering), Language (understanding and using words)

Anything else I should know?  The longer a child has a hearing impairment that has gone undetected the greater their language development can be delayed. This activity is presented by the Good to Go From Head To Toe! initiative. (link orange to www.begood2go.org)

Friday, May 14 – Police Pals Day
Join us to celebrate the variety of tasks and duties that Police Officers do through fun activities, story times, and presentations with real Irvine Police Department Officers! Children will have the opportunity to play out a variety of scenarios with “real public officers” as they learn about bullying, bicycling, and personal safety.

Why should I partake in this? These presentations will help your child develop self-esteem and stay safe in their home, community, and while riding their bicycles. They will learn about:
 
•Bullying: The Irvine Police Department focuses on empowering children by teaching them what constitutes bullying, how to recognize different types of bullying, and how to respond to bullies in different situations.

•Personal Safety: The personal safety presentation provides children with simple tools that help them stay safe in their community.  Topics discussed, include: appropriate use of 911, knowing your personal information, keeping parents informed of “whereabouts”, stranger awareness, using the ‘Buddy System’, staying in familiar places, being aware of surroundings, safety rules when home alone, and the importance of  having the confidence to speak up or leave an uncomfortable situation.

•Bicycle Safety: Bicycle Safety allows young riders to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to remain safe on the roadway.  Bicycle safety presentations include the following topics: rules of the road, equipment requirements, helmet laws, bicycle maintenance, and licensing requirements.

Saturday, May 15 – International Day of Families
Join us in celebrating the joy of a family at Pretend City!  There will be various story times throughout the day where children will hear about different types of families from all over the world and see their photos.  The whole family is invited to write on our “Family Chain” in the Art Studio about what keeps their family strong and what are their favorite family activities are.

Tuesday, May 18 – Speech, Language & Hearing Screenings
Speech Pathology Associates and Providence Speech and Hearing will be offering free screenings for speech, language and hearing. Each child’s screening will take approximately 5-15 minutes, and will be proctored by a licensed clinician with the state of California and certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Time: 10:30a.m. – 12:30p.m.
Who is it for? 18 months +
How do I sign up and by when? N/A
Is there a fee? Free, paid museum admission not required nor included

Why should I partake in this? Speech and Language Screening tests are conducted to identify health conditions that might need further assessment and are an important part of well-child health care. Speech and language screenings assess a child's ability in the areas of:  Voice (tone, loudness), Articulation (pronouncing sounds), Fluency (stuttering), Language (understanding and using words)

Is your child prepared for preschool? Give them the extra support they may need to optimize their social, cognitive and brain development before they start school. Throughout this 10 week workshop, you will learn things like:

•How to generate effective solutions to common parenting challenges

•What are appropriate developmental expectations

•Specific strategies for how to respond to challenging behavior

•Positive parenting skills and the difference they can make in your child’s behavior

Baby chickens will be hatching in our Pretend City Farm and our two week old baby chicks will be going to a local Farm! Children can watch the chickens “do their work” to peck themselves out of their egg shells and be born into Pretend City.  You can also join us for the Chicken Dance held throughout the day!

There are four major domains of infant and toddler learning and development– Social/Emotional, Language, Cognitive, and Perceptual/Motor Development.  This workshop presented by WestEd faculty will provide an overview of each of these domains, and help adults learn about their role in facilitating this type of learning in their child’s life.

Tutor My Way will provide a comfortable and friendly environment where your children will have the opportunity to interact with other children through age appropriate learning based activities. The activities will range from developing fine motor skills to fun imagination based lessons.

Who is it for? Children Infant - 6 years (Parents must remain in the workshop/on the premises)

How do I sign up and by when? This is only available to children whose parents are attending the Facilitating Early Learning parent workshop. Please indicate when you register for the workshop the name, age, and how many children you will be brining to the Tutor My Way Enrichment Program.

The enrichment program provided by Tutor My Way will give your child an opportunity to engage in age appropriate learning activities in a fun, safe environment with other children. (Tutor My Way is a reputable educational service and tutoring provider in our community and this program will be administered by a California Credentialed Teacher, who is also a Reading Specialist.)

Friday, May 21 – Free Developmental Screening Day!
Regular developmental screenings are an essential part of maintaining your child’s healthy child development. Join us to receive a free developmental screening for your little one, including motor, communication, social and thinking skills by a qualified health professional. What to expect at the screening:

•A complete developmental screening for your child in approximately 30 minutes

•On–site healthcare professionals to answer child development questions

•Plenty of activities to keep the little ones occupied while you wait; timed ticketing will be implemented if needed.

Screening times:             
General admission - First come, first serve: 9:00a.m. – 11:00a.m.
Member’s only - By RSVP: 1:00p.m. – 3:00p.m.

Friday, May 21 – Firefighter Friday!
Come to Pretend City on Firefighter Friday to learn all about firefighters and fire safety!  Angela Garbiso who works with the Orange County Fire Authority will share a story about fire safety called, “No Dragons for Tea”. It’s a unique way to introduce this very important subject. Through this educational interactive story, children gain more knowledge about fire, fire safety, risk reduction, water safety, basic first aid, and more.

Saturday, May 22 – Water Warriors
In honor of National Maritime Day, children will learn what it takes to be a water hero, otherwise known as a lifeguard! Learn how lifeguards make our beaches and pools safe and enjoyable. Listen to the staff of Waterworks Aquatics as they share with us their real life experiences of protecting swimmers at local pools and beaches throughout Orange County. These classes will promote water safety, familiarize participants with the training involved to become a lifeguard and what these individuals do to educate, inform, and protect swimmers around the world. Topics discussed will cover ocean and water safety, first aid, and lifesaving techniques.

Are you struggling with the decision to start your child in kindergarten? Concerned about the expectations of kindergarten? Does your child have a late summer or fall birthday? Would you like suggestions on ways to work with your child before starting kindergarten? What about kindergarten standards in the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD)?

Come talk with a certificated teacher who is also the program coordinator for IUSD School Readiness and gain some clarity about starting kindergarten. This class is for parents of children under the age of 6 who will be enrolled in a kindergarten program in either July or September 2010.

Thursday, May 27 – Chef for a Day
Join Cookamation as they teach you how to become a Chef for the day! Through this fun filled class children will not only see a demonstration on how to make Alfredo sauce but they will also have the opportunity to make their very own pasta from scratch! Children will utilize basic kitchen tools to roll out the pasta and form sheets followed by creating strips of noodles.  Once complete children can take the pasta home for a quick 3-minute alfredo pasta meal!
Time: 2:30p.m. – 3:00p.m.

Who is it for? All children 2.5 years and up and their grown-ups who visit the museum. )Grown-up participation program.)
